Ancient Capital and Endemic Wildlife
Since relocating to Singapore, the foreign country I’ve visited most often has been Indonesia, each trip driven by a passion for observing birds or marine life. Yet Indonesia is not only a paradise of biodiversity. It is also a vast archipelago stretching east to west, rich in cultural diversity. Among them, the Borobudur temple near Yogyakarta stands out as one of the world’s great Buddhist monuments. After five years of focusing solely on nature trips, We finally decided to plan a trip with culture as the main purpose.
Borobudur, built more than a millennium ago, carries a dramatic history. After the decline of the ruling dynasty, the temple was buried under volcanic ash from nearby Mount Merapi and forgotten for centuries. That story alone made visiting deeply moving. I was especially struck by the stupas on the upper terraces. Their almost modern design, set against lush landscapes and serene Buddha statues, created a view I found unforgettable.
シンガポールに住まいを移して以来、最も頻繁に訪れている外国がインドネシアですが、その目的は毎回鳥か魚の自然観察。一方で、インドネシアは東西に広く伸びた島国でもあることから、文化的にも多様で豊かな国でもあります。中でもジョグジャカルタにおけるボロブドゥール遺跡は世界的にも有名であり、世界三大仏教遺跡にも数えられます。自然を目的としない旅行もたまにはしてみようと、5年がたって漸く計画をしてみたのです。
ボロブドゥール遺跡は千数百年前に建造されたのち、時の王朝が衰退し、さらに遺跡にほど近いムラピ山の噴火による火山灰に埋もれたことで、人々に忘れられたまま眠っていたという、壮大なストーリーも相まって、感慨深い体験となりました。特に最上階のストゥーパはどこかモダンなデザインで、豊かな自然を背景とした仏像のある景色がとても気に入りました。
Still, whenever we travel, nature inevitably calls to us, it feels like karma. Indonesia, home to the greatest number of endemic species in the world, offers abundant wildlife even on Java, where Yogyakarta lies. With a telephoto lens in hand, I wandered around the hotel grounds and soon spotted a Javan Munia feeding near the restaurant. Later, the call of a Javan Kingfisher echoed nearby, though the bird proved elusive, vanishing at the slightest human presence. Only on the final day did we manage a satisfactory record shot, leaving me eager for another attempt in the future.
一方で、やっぱり私たちは旅行に出かけると、どうしてもその土地の自然が気になって仕方ないのです。これはもはやカルマです。世界最大の固有種数を誇るインドネシアでありますから、ジョクジャカルタのあるジャワ島にも豊かな自然が広がっているのです。望遠レンズを持ってホテルの周りをまわってみると、さっそく固有種のコシグロキンパラがレストラン脇で採餌しています。その内、ジャワショウビンの鳴き声も聞こえてきました。しかし、人の気配を察知すればすぐに飛び去ってしまうほどに、非常に敏感でなかなか撮影機会を得られません。どうにか最終日になって、納得のいく記録写真を撮ることができましたが、いつかまたリベンジしたいと思っています。
For birding near Yogyakarta, Mount Merapi is an obvious destination, but eBird’s hotspot map revealed another site: Jatimulyo, a village nestled on the mountain’s slopes between the temple and the airport. I reached out to an Indonesian guide friend to arrange a visit, but plans fell through. On the last day, we decided to go without an appointment. Thanks to online hints, I found the likely meeting point, and by sheer luck a local guide was available to lead us for the day. That unexpected fortune made the experience all the more rewarding.
ジョグジャカルタ近郊の探鳥地といえば、遺跡を覆った火山灰を噴出したムラピ山もありますが、eBirdのhotspotを見てみると、遺跡と空港の間にJatimulyoと呼ばれる山の中腹に位置する村に探鳥地があることを発見しました。友人のインドネシアガイドに連絡を取り、その地でのガイドのアレンジを試みるも上手くいかず、旅行の最終日となった日、アポイントなしで村を訪れてみることにしたのです。オンライン上の情報から、探鳥の拠点となる場所についてはなんとなく割り出していたので向かってみると、現地のガイドさんのスケジュールがたまたま空いていて、1日ガイドをしてくれることになったのです。ダメもとで訪れていただけに、その幸運が嬉しく、探鳥を一心に楽しむことができました。
Encounters included endemic gems such as the Javan Sunbird and the Black-banded Bulbul. Though I didn’t capture perfect photographs, seeing the rare Javan Blue Flycatcher, found only in this region, felt like more than we could have hoped for. With so many fascinating birds still awaiting discovery, I know we’ll return to Java again someday.
固有種のヒイロタイヨウチョウ、シシガシラゴシキドリを始めとして、貴重な出会いがありました。納得のいくいい写真は撮れませんでしたが、当地でしか観察が期待できないジャワヒメアオヒタキも見ることができたのは少しで出来すぎだったかもしれません。ジャワ島にはまだまだ魅力的な鳥がいるので、いつかまた機会を見つけて訪問したいと思っています。
