2026年が始まり、例年よりも雨の多いシンガポールに飛び込んできた衝撃的なニュースは、ヤイロチョウの出現でした。
前回の御目見えは2019年のHindhede Nature Park。当時はコロナ禍の中で、密を避けるために小さな公園内には入場制限がかかり、入り口には長蛇の列ができていました。その頃の私はPittaなどという鳥の存在すら知らず、ただ何となくこの公園をその朝の探鳥の目的地に選んだだけでしたが、とりあえず並んでみることにしたのです。
自分の番を今か今かと待つこと数時間、ようやく回ってきたチャンスで与えられた時間はわずか数分。祈るような気持ちで出現を待ち、目を凝らしましたが、とうとうその姿を見ることはできませんでした。
そうして2026年。旧正月の期間中に舞い込んだ当種出現の報。しかしその時はインドネシア東部にダイビング旅行中で、チャンスを逃しました。その後しばらくして再出現した際にも国外出張。。悉くタイミングが合わずじまいでしたが、渡りの季節も終わりに差し掛かる3月、ようやく念願が叶うチャンスが訪れ、公園に向かったのです。
正確な場所を把握していませんでしたが、親切なバーダー（当地のバーダーはほとんどがとても親切です）に教えてもらい、目的に向かうと、ちょうど遠くの方で動き回っていました。しばらくすると、もう手の届きそうな距離まで近づいてきてくれ、慌ててテレコンバータを外して撮影をすることができたのです。他のヤイロチョウにはない奥ゆかしい美しさがそこにはありました。
As 2026 began, with Singapore experiencing more rain than usual, the incredible news was the appearance of the pitta.
The last time it appeared was in 2019 at Hindhede Nature Park. With COVID-19 restrictions, entry to the small park was limited and long queues formed at the gate. At that time, I didn’t even know a bird called “pitta” existed. I had simply chosen the park as my birding destination that morning and joined the line.
After waiting for hours, my turn finally came. The time allowed was only a few minutes. With a prayerful heart I waited, eyes straining for any sign of movement, but in the end I never saw it.
Fast forward to 2026. News of the bird’s appearance arrived during the Lunar New Year period. Unfortunately, I was away on a diving trip in eastern Indonesia and missed the chance. Later, when it reappeared, I was again abroad on business. Every opportunity seemed to slip through my fingers. But as the migration season drew to a close, in March, at last the long-awaited chance arrived, and I headed to the park.
I didn’t know the exact location, but a friendly birder guided me to the spot. And then, finally, it was in front of me – moving about in the distance. After a while, it came close that it felt within reach. In a rush I removed the teleconverter and managed to capture it. This species has an understated, graceful beauty unlike any other pitta.
